CHAPTER FIVE

"That's Jacobi," Schwarz said, leaning forward to peer through the rain-streaked windshield.

Grimaldi checked out the lean figure, coat collar turned up against the chill wind gusting along the street. Rain had followed them in from the main highway, to this small town perched at the foot of wooded hills. Outside the town, a mile or so north, was the open cast mining site that provided the town's sole industry. Still operating, on a smaller scale than during its heyday, the mine only produced small tonnage. It managed to pay its way. That was about all.

"With everything that's happening," Grimaldi said, "makes you wonder why he's come back here. The people looking for him aren't going to be far behind."

"People in trouble, with nowhere else to go, need somewhere they can go back to. Home is a base to touch. It has substance. Roots. Where else can Jacobi go?"

"Guess you're right."

They sat and watched Jacobi climb into the truck he had just hitched a ride with.

"Let's wait until he's clear of town and had his ride. We don't want too many civilians getting caught up in any confrontations," Schwarz said.

Grimaldi fired up the 4x4 and waited until the truck had moved off before he fell in behind, keeping a good distance behind. He had no trouble tailing it. The truck driver took his time.

"What do we know about family or friends here?" Grimaldi asked. "Did Stony Man come up with anything?"

Schwarz had been speaking to Barbara Price only minutes earlier as they had approached Lansing.

"They pulled Jacobi's file, military and civilian. The only family left here is his late father's brother. Evan Jacobi. The guy lives a half mile out of town along this road. He runs a local haulage business and has contracts with the local mine. He has a wife. No kids."

"Has there been any contact recently?"

"Nothing in the recent past."

"Jacobi's military file would have all his contacts. They'll know he has family here."

Schwarz nodded.

"One other thing. Earlier today Jacobi had a run-in with a cop. Seems the officer stopped to check because Jacobi was parked at the side of the highway. When he went to speak to him, Jacobi panicked and shot the cop. Shoulder wound. Then Jacobi took off. He abandoned the car Cassie had lent him and must have caught a bus to bring him the rest of the way to Lansing."

"He shoots a cop and still comes here?"

"What else can the guy do, Jack? Bet your last dime he feels cut off from the rest of the world. He can't go to the military because he doesn't know who to trust. Now he has this cop shooting hanging over his head. He's suddenly out in the cold."

"These people who work for Gardener? Are they legitimate military? Or are they ex, gone mercenary?"

"That's being checked out now. I have a feeling the ones doing all the running are off the books."

"You located him?" Renelli asked, impatience crowding his words. "Don't disappoint me, Deke."

"He's on his way.
